Earth Day Pledge

Earth Day is Every Day.

What we've already done:

  • recycle all aluminum, glass, cardboard, and newspaper.

  • changed all of our light bulbs to compact fluorescents.

  • car pool everyday.

  • traded our SUV.

  • ride bicycles, scooters and motorcycles when we can.

  • walk when we can.

  • use refillable, non-disposable coffee cups and water bottles.

  • use reusable shopping bags instead of disposable plastic or paper bags.

  • wash our clothes in cold water.

  • pay all of our bills online.

  • got our heat pumps serviced.

  • keep our cars serviced.

What more we can do:

  • learn to compost.

  • use the library more.

  • get our name taken off more junk mail lists.

  • suggest to people who send mailings to create email lists.

  • walk more.

  • get programmable thermostats.

What do you do Every Day for Earth Day?

Let's see... some of the green stuff we do we've done forever, mainly as a cost-cutting thing (like washing clothes in cold water, hanging shirts to dry...)

1) Walking to the corner grocery, about 2 blocks away, when we only have a few things to get

2) Reusuable bags at the grocery

3) Staying under the speed limit on the interstate, and hoping that the speed limits get reduced across the board

4) Turning off the a/c when we aren't home during the day, and keeping all blinds closed, shut off rooms that aren't used, yada yada.

5) Never running the dishwasher without a full load, which sometimes means going 3 - 4 days between.

Other stuff like recycling...

Well where we live there are no recycling facilities! Seriously, it was a shock to me coming from the UK...but we do the following:

Gradually changing over the lightbulbs

Keeping the A/C useage to a minimum, blinds down and rooms shutoff

Only use the dishwasher or washing machine for full loads, now wash clothes on a warm/cold cycle and use organic cleaners

Drink the Brita refillable at the supermarket 2 gallon jugs and fill re-usable bottles for daily drinking

We have bought bikes and sysle around our smalltown, anywhere else is too far

Use the library for books

Oh and I forgot, we have been cancelling all our junk mail catalogues religiously

Pay bills and get statements online

Heat with wood stove
Recycle everything
changed out some of the lightbulbs
we let the dandelions flourish!
email whenever possible
carpool whenever possible
cancelled delivered papers/mags and now read them online
organic as much as possible, but more importantly locally produced whenever possible
take cloth bags to store everytime
use lightweight cloth produce bags for lettuce, etc
speak out against the big ethanol push, it uses more energy to create it!
vent our dryer (with a filter!) into the laundry room to use that heat/humidity in the winter months
hand wash the dishes often
use reusable water bottles, we will not purchase water bottles!
